How to Upload and Manage Your Base Resumes
Learn how to import PDF, DOCX, or text files, paste LinkedIn profiles, and manage multiple base resumes.
What is a Base Resume?
Your base resume is the master document containing your full career history, past job titles, company names, dates, metrics, and technical skills. You only need to import this once.
Whenever you apply for a job, ResumeSkip uses your base resume as the raw source of truth. It rephrases and reorders your existing experience to match the posting without inventing fake jobs or skills.
Supported Upload Formats
In the workspace, click 'Import Resume'. The 'Upload File' tab parses your file locally on your device in your browser. Supported formats:
- PDF (.pdf): Must contain selectable text (not a scanned image).
- Word (.docx): Standard Microsoft Word documents.
- Rich Text Format (.rtf): Standard formatted text documents.
- Plain Text (.txt or .md): Raw unformatted text files.
- JSON Resume (.json): Files in the open jsonresume.org schema.
Older .doc Files: Legacy .doc files from Word 97-2003 cannot be parsed directly in modern browsers. Open the file in Word or Google Docs and save it as .docx or .pdf first.
No File? Paste Your LinkedIn Profile
The 'Paste LinkedIn Profile' tab lets you build a base resume with no file at all. Copy your headline, About, Experience, Education, and Skills text from your LinkedIn profile and paste it in. See the dedicated LinkedIn import article for step-by-step instructions.
Managing Multiple Base Resumes
If you target distinctly different career paths (for example, Product Management vs Software Engineering), you can save multiple base resumes in your workspace.
When starting a new tailoring session, select whichever base resume is the closest fit for the job posting.
